“How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is clearly Ocean” Arthur C. Clarke.
It’s Earth Day and we’re celebrating the ocean.
Here’s why:
? The oceans cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface.
? Around 70% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the oceans.
? The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean, covering about 30% of the planet’s surface.
? Aotearoa / New Zealand is more than land. In fact, our marine estate – called the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) – is approx 4.4 million square kms! That is 15 times larger than our land (which is only 268,690 square kms).
? 80% of Aotearoa New Zealand’s biodiversity is in our ocean (not actually on our land!).
? In our EEZ, we have an estimated 43,000 marine species just waiting to be discovered.
